Topics: This seminar will explore the ways in which pharmacists, staff members and customers are affected by their surroundings and how the environment also contributes to their interaction. The seminar will cover the following topic areas: Lighting: Research has shown that changes in lighting can substantially affect dispensary error rates. How much lighting is enough? Can you have too much light? What other factors must you consider when considering the optimum lighting? Colour: Does it make sense to force people to work in an environment where the fixtures, counters, shelves and walls are all white? How does colour affect us? How can colour be applied to different areas of the pharmacy to set the appropriate mood? Noise: Phones ringing, printers printing, ventilation fans running, people talking (or even yelling) - what effect does noise have on our performance? Is there such a thing as good noise? How do we reduce noise? Can "white" or "ambient" noise be used to improve the work area? Music: The "Mozart Effect" has been used to explain improvements in students' learning patterns. Can music be used in the pharmacy to modify our behaviours? Studies indicate that we can not only improve employee performance but increase front shop sales if we play the right music. Ergonomics: Proper design of workstations, work areas and tools can also positively affect productivity and efficiency. Height, colour, shape, aesthetics of workstations, work areas and tools are explored to find the optimum approach for efficiency.
